Today is the birthday of the prominent scientist, the advisor of the science of Microbiology in Azerbaijan, Academician Mammad Salmanov with the Order of Shohrat.
On behalf of our team, led by Panah Muradov, General Director of the Institute of Microbiology, corresponding member of ANAS, we sincerely congratulate the academician who has reached the 91st step of the life path. We wish him robust health, long life, and greater success in his scientific activities!

Mammad Ahad oglu Salmanov was born on January 12, 1932 in the village of Garagyshlak, Ulukhanly-Zangibasar district, Irevan region. In 1955, he graduated with honors from the Veterinary faculty of the Azerbaijan State Agricultural Institute (present Azerbaijan State Agrarian University) and entered the graduate school of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.

In 1959-1969 he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Zoology of ANAS, since 1970 at the Institute of Microbiology of ANAS, and in 1973-1999 - head of the laboratory of water microbiology. In 1999-2002, he was the head of the Department of General Biology and Genetics of the Azerbaijan Medical University. From 2002 to May 2020, the scientist worked as the director of the Institute of Microbiology of ANAS. He is currently working as a senior research fellow at this institution.

In 1960, Mammad Salmanov received the degree of PhD in the specialty "Microbiology", in 1982 - the degree of Doctor of Science, and in 1996 - the academic title of Professor. In 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, in 2007 - an active member.

The main scientific activity of academician Mammad Salmanov is connected with the formation and development of water microbiology in Azerbaijan. Thus, under his direct supervision and participation, a survey of all water bodies of the country, including the Caspian Sea, was carried out from the point of view of microbiological, as well as ecological and hydrobiological aspects. Of great importance are the monitoring fundamental microbiological and ecological studies conducted by Mammad Salmanov for the first time in the last 50 years in the Caspian Sea, on the Kura, Araz rivers and their main tributaries throughout the basin in the territories of 5 states.

The scientist is the author of 385 scientific papers, including 6 monographs, 3 books and 1 patent, more than 280 abstracts, popular science articles. The scientist's monographs were also published by the Russian ("Nauka") and Iranian ("Rasht") publishing houses. Under his scientific guidance, 1 Doctor of Science, 20 Doctors of Philosophy were trained.

For many years of effective work in the field of science in our country, a prominent scientist was awarded the Honorary Diploma of ANAS in 2002, the Shohrat Order in 2005, and the Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2022.
