The study of all water bodies of our country, including the Caspian Sea, from the point of view of microbiological, as well as ecological and hydrobiological aspects, is connected with the name of an outstanding microbiological scientist, Academician Mammad Salmanov, who was awarded the Order of "Shohrat" and "Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan".

Mammad Ahad oglu Salmanov was born on January 12, 1932 in the village of Garagishlaq, Ulukhanli-Zangibasar district, Yerevan district. In 1955, he graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Azerbaijan State Agricultural Institute (present - Azerbaijan State Agrarian University) with honors, and entered the graduate school of the Institute of Zoology of the AS of the Azerbaijan SSR.

In 1959-1969, he worked at the Institute of Zoology of the AS of Azerbaijan SSR, and from 1970, he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Microbiology, and in 1973-1999, he worked as the head of the Water Microbiology Laboratory. In 1999-2002, he was the head of the Department of General Biology and Genetics of Azerbaijan Medical University. From 2002 to May 2020, the scientist worked as the director of the Institute of Microbiology of ANAS (present - Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan). Currently, he employs as a senior researcher of that institution.

In 1960, Mammad Salmanov received a candidate of science degree in "Microbiology", in 1982, he received the scientific degree of doctor of sciences, and in 1996, he received the scientific title of professor. He was elected a corresponding member of ANAS in 2001, and active member in 2007.

Academician Mammad Salmanov's main scientific activity is related to the foundation and development of water microbiology in Azerbaijan. Thus, the investigation of all water basins of the country, including the Caspian Sea, from the point of view of microbiological, as well as ecological and hydrobiological aspects, was carried out under his direct leadership and participation. Monitoring-oriented fundamental microbiological and ecological research conducted by Mammad Salmanov for the first time in the last 50 years in the Caspian Sea, in the Kura, Araz rivers and their main tributaries throughout the basin on 5 national territories is of great importance.

The scientist is the author of 385 scientific works, including 6 monographs, 3 books and 1 patent, more than 280 essays, popular scientific articles. The scientist's monographs were also published in Russian ("Nauka") and Iranian ("Rasht") publishing houses. Under his scientific guidance, 20 PhDs were prepared.

The well-known scientist was awarded the Honorary Order of ANAS in 2002, the Order of "Shohrat" in 2005, and "Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan" in 2022 for his long-term effective activity in the development of science in our country.

We congratulate the prominent scientist on his birthday, wish him a long life, robust health and success in his future activities!
