An international team of researchers has discovered that a group of microorganisms called Asgard Archaea is the origin of all complex life forms on Earth.
AZERTAC reports with reference to information on the "Scitechdaily" website that this group of cells obtained by researchers details how living things change during evolution.
The first life form to evolve on Earth was called prokaryotes, a group of single-celled organisms that include bacteria. Two to three billion years later, compact organisms called eukaryotes appeared. New research has identified the Asgardian Archaea, which laid the foundation for the transition from unicellular to multicellular organisms.
Lund University biology researcher Courtney Stairs notes that the Asgardian Archaea help us systematize the evolution of living things from our single-celled ancestors to the present day. The fact that the Asgards formed a primitive group of creatures was determined by the discovery of proteins in their bodies dating back to millions of years ago.
